Probiotics: Why are these bugs so good for you?

The immune system is an integral part of our bodies as it serves as an army for fighting off disease and infection.  Many factors play into the functioning of the immune system, including diet, exercise, sleep, stress, medications and nutritional supplementation.  80% of the immune system is actually located in your gastrointestinal tract which is often a pathogen’s first contact with the interior of our bodies.  Gut immune function is regulated by the presence of Pre and Probiotics – beneficial bacteria and/or yeasts that naturally colonize the gut and optimize immune function.  Natural bacteria are found all over the body including the oral cavity, on the skin, in the stomach, intestines and colon, and in the reproductive and urinary tracts.  Probiotics are useful because they survive in the human body, can kill pathogens, bind to human cells and form a barrier to disease causing organisms, stimulate antibody production, destroy toxins, and stimulate the immune system.
