Spring “Cleansing”

As spring approaches, we begin to clean out our closets, tend to the yard, and prepare our homes for the much anticipated summer weather. But what about our bodies?  As we come out of winter hibernation, there is no better way to make the transition from winter to summer than with a spring cleanse! During the winter, our bodies naturally retain as much as possible in the way of nutrients as well as toxins, to help fuel the immune system and to provide us with enough “substance” to get through the winter months. As we make the transition into spring, it is important that we prepare our bodies for the warmer weather, increased outdoor physical activity, and locally grown foods by eliminating as much of the accumulated waste as possible.  Some people who may benefit from a detox are those with chronic headaches or migraines, generalized muscle or joint pains, food sensitivities, or environmental allergies to name a few.  Check out these tips for doing your own spring detox.  Aim for a 1-4 week cleanse, I prefer 2 weeks. Cleansing supplements are available at your local health store and can be used but aren’t necessary.  Talk to a Naturopath to find out which supplement program is right for you.

1)    Get into the mindset. It often takes a bit of mental preparation to get used to the idea of a total body cleanse.  Take some time to ponder the idea, stock up on healthy foods and snacks, and choose a time during the month when there aren’t a lot of temptations such as dinner parties, birthdays or vacations.
